Snoring Surgery, Is It Really Necessary?
While snoring surgery is a treatment there are so many different snoring solutions. Before you go down the "sugary" road, make sure you explore all of the possible solutions.
Prior to snoring surgery you need to ask your self, what are the most common causes of snoring. If medical examination rules out any underlying disease or health condition, the most common causes of snoring are:
* Being Overweight or Being Obese - Causes fatty tissues to form beneath your skin, coating the body when a weight gain occurs. Fatty tissue in the neck can cause your throat to become smaller, increasing the likelihood of a snoring problem.
* Drinking Alcohol - Which is a depressant which increases the relaxation of your body, which includes the throat and tongue muscles. With these muscles relaxed, the likelihood of snoring increases greatly.
* Smoking - A long-term history of smoking cigarettes can be a factor in a person’s snoring.
* Medications - Anti-histamines or sleeping pills, have been shown to exhibit the same issues as alcohol, causing muscle relaxation the mouth and throat and promoting sneezing.
And
* Allergies - When afflicted with allergies, even food allergies, the nasal passage can be obstructed, causing a lack of air flow and making inhalation difficult.
Most of the common causes are controllable by you, especially your weight, drinking alcohol, smoking and the medications you take. Your weight by foods you eat and the amount of exercise you get. Your drinking by drinking less and not drinking 4 - 6 before bedtime. Your Smoking by stopping. And your medications by talking with your doctor about side effects and possible alternatives.
Allergies often affect the mucous membranes which become inflamed and congested. The congestion blocks the airway and snoring occurs. Some people have reported an improvement in their snoring if they avoid dairy products and others report that vitamin C actually worsens their condition.
Your sleeping position is known to contribute to snoring and those who sleep on their backs tend to be worse snorers so a side sleeping position is to be encouraged. Nasal strips that help keep the nasal passages open, sprays, and many more.
Another device to discourage snorers from adopting a sleeping on their back position is the snore ball. You can even make this yourself, a small ball (a golf ball or tennis ball) is sewn into the back of the snorer’s pajamas or night clothes making it very uncomfortable to sleep while lying on your back. There also are pillows on the market that forces the snorer to sleep on their side.
Another device exists, however this one you must purchase, unless you are an electrical engineer – the sleep position monitor, which registers a change in position and emits a beeping alarm. The idea is that the snorer becomes programmed not to sleep on their back and the alarm can eventually be discarded.
Nasal strips can be purchased and when affixed to the nose, you often see pro football players wearing these, act to widen the nasal passages.
Aromatherapy is one alternative to use. Marjoram is a very successful snoring essential oil. It is able to still the vibrations of the tissues by working on the lining of the throat. All you do is open a couple of jars of marjoram and lavender, another useful essential oil, and put them around the bed two hours before sleep. The scents will fill the room with an inviting smell that will encourage sleep, assist with breathing while eliminating nightly snoring.
Relaxation therapy is also a very good source of snoring combating. Sometimes snoring can be caused by stress and so what you need is to be relaxed before trying to sleep. There are several good programs worth trying like Tai Chi, yoga, or massage.
It is believed that by using magnetic therapy you can stimulate the nerves in the nose, opening them and remove the obstruction that has been causing the snoring. Magnets would be put all over the body, not just the nose, to stimulate the entire well-being of the body as well as specifically the nerves. This therapy also helps weight loss, which itself assists in ending snoring. Some people have gone so far as to wear a magnetic nose ring claiming to have successfully kept open the nasal airways by this method.
Hypnosis is another method worth trying. This is not as successful as some other methods as one does not snore voluntarily the way a person decides to smoke. But, again this solution could help with weight lose and that helps with eliminating or at least reducing snoring.
Before bed have some warm water with a little honey, it will not only taste good but the honey will coat the trachea. Try combining apple cider vinegar, honey and warm water, this too will taste good and is known as a strong anti-snoring remedy. Or try herbal teas. Just don’t over do it as what you are aiming for is things that help clear the airways not put you to sleep.
In short, there are many treatments to be tried and tested before resorting to surgery to cure a snoring problem.
