An inexpensive home remedy is to take a small ball, golf ball or a walnut and sew it into a pouch or pocket on the back of your pajamas or night clothes. Rolling on to your back will still be possible, but it will no be very uncomfortable. There are also a number of special pillows available on the market that encourage side-sleeping and discourage back-sleeping. You may want to try one of these to see if it helps you to maintain an optimum sleeping position.

Smoking - It is a well known fact that smoking cigarettes can lead to a snoring condition.

Alcohol - Since alcohol is a depressant, it relaxes the muscles in your body more than normal when you are asleep. The muscles in your throat tend to be more relaxed after a night of drinking, and that can lead to some serious snoring. Sleeping pills are also known to have similar effects, with the muscle relaxant property once again being responsible for the snoring issue.

Allergies - Treat them with a decongestant as opposed to an anti-histamine. While anti-histamines are established as a bad buy when you are trying to stop snoring, leaving allergies untouched can often cause nasal congestion which can be just as bad when it comes to snoring. For that reason, it is recommended to take nasal decongestants to treat your allergies before bed. Snore-proof allergy treatments include Claritin and Alavert.

The mucous membranes that line the airways can become very readily inflamed once again restricting the passage of air and causing the characteristic noise of snoring. Mucous membranes can become inflamed through contact with allergens. Known allergens in food are nuts, dairy products and wheat – it may even be that you have a sensitivity to something else. By cutting out suspect foods and tracing any allergies you can improve and reduce your snoring levels.

Also, is your room at a humidity level that is good for you? Dry rooms can often lead to a dry throat, which can aid the vibrating that causes snoring. A humidifier is a good method of fixing this problem if you often wake up with a sore throat and dry mouth.

A common cause of snoring, and this is often caused by being overweight, is having weak palate (the top or roof of your mouth). This exercise will help to strengthen the muscles in your throat that contribute to snoring when they are lax. Many have claimed that this approach is a favorable one, and it couldn’t hurt to try. Since a weak soft palate is a common cause for snoring, you can exercise this part of your throat by doing the following workout:

Put the tip of your tongue on your palate. Then, do your best to suck hard on the back of your tongue. When done correctly, you should feel the muscles in your palate straining and tightening. Experiment a little bit, finding the best way to tighten and release your palate’s muscles; once you get the hang of it, you’ll be toning up your palate in no time!

If, however, these solutions do not suffice to solve your problem, further action may be required. Some people go so far as to have surgery to remove their snoring problem. Check with your family doctor or another health care professional to see what the right solution is for you if all of the above fail.
